Holiday Fun At Traverse City

Traverse City Holidays: Real Life Whoville

When sugar-soft snowflakes drift into Downtown Traverse City on November 1st, it’s about time we start talking holiday cheer in the Cherry Capital. Sure, you’ve experienced the heat of July and the brilliant colors of fall, but do you know the magic of a Traverse City winter? Pull up a cozy seat, holiday heroes — and don’t be shy with the eggnog or cocoa. From the community tree lighting to the final celebration of 2017, here’s the breakdown of Traverse City celebrations that’ll set your holiday spirit aglow. Need more Christmas cheer? There’s plenty to go around at www.traversecity.com.

FOR: THE OVER ACHIEVER WHO’S ALREADY SHOPPED FOR EVERYONE

First of all, whoa. Good work. Second, don’t you think you deserve a little “you” time at the spa? All of November, the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa celebrates “Month of Giving” by donating to local charity every time you indulge in certain services. And hey, since you’ve shopped for everybody but yourself, check out their 2-Night VIP Wine & Spa Weekends for a return getaway this spring.

FOR: THE SHOPPERS WHO GIVE EXTRA

On Saturday, November 11, Downtown Traverse City supports community nonprofits with a kickback on purchases. Whatever treasures you take home on Shop Your Community Day, 15% of your total will be donated to the charity of your choice. Go, you!

FOR: EVERYBODY. YES, EVERYBODY.

Every first Friday after Thanksgiving (nope, not Black Friday but the one after) just go ahead and clear your calendar. The Downtown Traverse City Light Parade, Santa’s Arrival and Community Tree Lighting make all your Whoville dreams come true. This year’s celebration takes place on December 1st and kicks off at 6:30 pm. Come bundled up and ready to harmonize with all your caroling neighbors gathered on Downtown’s Front Street.

FOR: THE SOCIALITE, DISGUISED AS A SHOPPER

So you’ve prioritized the parties before the shopping…no shame. In fact, there’s glory. Now’s your chance to combine the two in Ladies’ Shopping Night (Thursday, December 7) and Men’s Shopping Night (Thursday, December 14). Both evenings are brimming with refreshments and specials to check off the entire list, and the people watching — well it ain’t too shabby, either.

FOR: THE HOLIDAY HEALTH NUT

Jingle Run, Jingle Run, Jingle all the way straight to the next happy hour and pot luck. If that’s your reality this holiday season, get outside and shed a few cookies in the annual Jingle Bell Run in Traverse City. The 5K fun run/walk starts and finishes in the Warehouse District with a route that tours Traverse City’s most decked out sights. Come in your holiday getup at 5 pm on Sunday, December 17.

FOR: THE NEW YEAR’S BALL(ER)

Welcome to the Cherry Capital of the World, where we ring in every New Year with giant glowing fruit hanging from a crane. It’s awesome. The CherryT Ball Drop (read: charity ball drop) takes place on December 31 and invites the whole town to come party with a purpose. With a suggested donation of $3 or three non-perishable food items, your celebration helps local food pantries thrive through winter.
