Electronics Review: Logitech Surround Sound Speakers Z506

When the staff at London Ontario Golf are not out making birdies or schmoozing at the 19th hole, we’re hard at work updating our website numerous times daily. OK so, like you, we’re also checking our Facebook page and tweeting to our friends. But a fact’s a fact: when you operate a business and need a reliable, high-functioning sound system for a variety of technical needs, the Logitech brand pops into your head faster than a downhill 20-foot putt at August National on a Sunday afternoon.

Logitech has long been a staple here at London Ontario Golf. Ergonomic mice and keyboards are just a few items from Logitech which have helped make our workspace more comfortable during our nine years in business. Now, enter the Logitech Surround Sound Speakers Z506, a sophisticated sound system providing crystal-clear acoustics for a variety of applications.

There are computer speakers, and then there are surround sound systems. Considering the Z506 surround sound system’s price (MSRP $99.99), and its room-filling ability, these speakers come at an extremely reasonable price. Here’s why.

Although the Z506 system can be used for a variety of applications – including movies and television, gaming and an array of multi-media choices, I chose to use these speakers as a top-notch audio system with my main workspace. Connected to my laptop, and located strategically within my office, audio from the Internet, hard drive and storage media do much more than just fill my room: they make audio come alive. YouTube videos have never sounded better.

Out Of The Box

The Z506 surround sound system from Logitech packs 75 watts RMS, and include six speakers in all, including: two 8-watt front speakers, a 16-watt centre speaker and two 8-watt rear speakers, plus a 27-watt subwoofer. Total peak power is 150 watts. Weighing in at a total of 5.1kg, this system is extremely light for an audio system of its calibre.

Front speaker cables (2 metres), rear (5 metres), centre (2.7 metres) plus 2-metre accessory cables offer plenty of options for speaker placements. Complete with 3.5 mm and six-channel direct audio cables plus colour-coded speaker cables, installation is a cinch.

Logitech’s Z506 system works with your computer, music players, TVs, DVD players and other audio sources with 3.5 mm or RCA audio out, PlayStation®2, PLAYSTATION®3, Xbox 360® or Wii™ using the AV cable that comes with your console.

The Skinny

Powerful 75-watt room-filling 5.1 surround sound with a booming subwoofer offers great 3D stereo sound – even from two-channel sources. I really like the deep bass offered by these speakers. There’s even a dedicated bass control to turn things down when your co-worker is in the middle of meeting a strict deadline.

If you are looking for an inexpensive, yet high-quality, great-sounding speaker system for a myriad of audio applications, we highly recommend Logitech’s Surround Sound Speakers Z506 – great bang for your buck, powerful sound and a name you can trust make this system hard to top.
