Weir Wins Heart Award

As LondonOntarioGolf.com celebrates a 10th season, I am thrilled to announce that the 2014 winner of the London Ontario Golf Heart Award is Canadian golf legend and 2003 Masters Tournament champion Mike Weir.

LondonOntarioGolf.com established the Heart Award to recognize members of the London and area golf industry who unselfishly give back to the game of golf. Each June (Stroke Awareness Month), the Heart Award recipient is honoured within the categories of golf professionals/instructors, golf mentors, golf course owners/operators, golf course architects/designers and members of the media.

Previous London Ontario Golf Heart Award winners are Mike Olizarevitch (2011), Fred Kern (2012), and Patty Howard (2013). This year’s ceremony will take place in London, details to be announced soon.

Without a doubt, Weir has made an unparalleled impact on local golf, extending beyond his roots in his hometown of Bright’s Grove, Ontario. Because of his success on the golf course, including that memorable win at the 2003 Masters Tournament, and concurrently because of what he has done off the course with the Mike Weir Foundation, and Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive, Weir has inspired members of the golf community in London and area to achieve greatness in their own lives.

“With my roots in Southwestern Ontario, and having played on the local Junior Tyson Tour, it’s an honour to be recognized by LondonOntarioGolf.com. And it’s nice to see my name alongside the previous winners,” Weir told LondonOntarioGolf.com.

“I have fond memories of playing at London and area courses, including Thames Valley where my old pro, Steve Bennett, now runs the show. I hope I have inspired local youngsters to take up the game of golf, and to stay in the game their entire lives,” added Weir. “As well, through the Mike Weir Foundation, and the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive, I hope I’ve inspired others to give back to their community, on and off the golf course.

“I think it’s fantastic that the London Ontario Golf Heart Award brings attention to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, and offers awareness of the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle,” said Weir. “As a PGA Tour professional, fitness and heart health are of the utmost importance to me.”

February is Heart Month. The Heart & Stroke Foundation is the Official Charity of London Ontario Golf.

Weir has used his success as a professional golfer as a platform for helping other families in need with the creation of the Mike Weir Foundation in 2004. Mike launched a national fundraising program through his foundation, called the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids, supporting Children’s Miracle Network. The first Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive tournament in 2007, held at Sunningdale Golf and Country Club in London, Ontario, raised $562,000 for the Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario. Since 2007, the Mike Weir Foundation and the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids has raised close to $5 million for Children’s Miracle Network partner hospitals.
