As if we needed another reason to call London the Golf Capital of Canada this summer, out from behind the fescue jumps another golf tournament for the Forest City.

From August 11-13, Fanshawe Golf Club will host the Canadian Optimist Junior Golf National Championships. On July 4, Thames Valley Golf Club hosts a district qualifier – the Albert Hill Optimist Junior Golf tournament for Midwestern Ontario.

That event immediately follows the championship round of the Junior Tyson Tour’s Les Thomas Memorial Tournament July 3 at Thames Valley.

Long-time members of the local golf community, including your humble scribe, have never seen such a busy local golf schedule. It all kicked off in February with Golf Canada’s annual general meeting in London, and the London Golf Show & Sale at Western Fair District.

In April, the Greater London Mini Tour for local PGA of Canada pros kicked off with Jason Wyatt of Sunningdale Golf and Country Club winning the FireRock tournament. On June 1, Brett McIntosh of Greenhills Golf Club captured the 65th Annual Early Bird Tournament at St. Thomas Golf and Country Club.

Last week the momentum continued, with Golf Canada making a stop at London Hunt and Country Club to promote the LPGA Tour’s CP Women’s Open slated for August 18-24. Sunningdale will host a Monday qualifier August 18.

Last week, Golf Canada and Canadian Pacific confirmed what we reported here late last year: Children’s Health Foundation is the official charity partner of the CP Women’s Open.

The Ticket Rally for Heart campaign launched June 17 to encourage the public to buy spectator tickets for the CP Women’s Open prior to August 17, as CP will donate $100 to the Children’s Health Foundation for every ticket purchased. Additional fundraising activities will happen through unique on-site experiences for spectators during tournament week, with a social media campaign to be launched in July.

“Our railroad recently announced our new North American-wide community investment program CP Has Heart – and the Children’s Health Foundation is our ideal partner to improve children’s heart health,” said Canadian Pacific CEO E. Hunter Harrison.

Also on June 17, honoured Canada’s greatest golfer, Mike Weir, as recipient of the 2014 London Ontario Golf Heart Award. A large crowd gathered at Greenhills for an award ceremony which include members of the Weir family, and Mike joining in via Skype from his home in Sandy, Utah.

There’s no rest for the wicked, as the 25th Annual Children’s Golf Classic for Children’s Health Foundation July 7-9 includes a visit from Golf Channel personality David Feherty July 7 at London Convention Centre. And FireRock hosts the 2014 PGA Women’s Championship of Canada July 29-31.

“The PGA of Canada is excited to be heading to FireRock and the golfing hotbed of London, Ontario,” said PGA of Canada President Gregg Schubert. “There’s no doubt the week will showcase a number of the best women golfers from across Canada, the United States and the rest of the world.”

If that’s not enough, the Canadian Women’s Amateur Tournament visits Oxford Golf and Country Club/Craigowan in Woodstock July 21-25.

Our golf frenzy wraps up September 8-18 as Sunningdale hosts PGA Tour Canada’s Tour Championship of Canada.

The Canadian Optimist Junior Golf National Championships are a great addition to our local golf calendar, which this year also includes numerous club events, provincial and national qualifiers and hundreds of charity events.

Indeed, London is the Golf Capital of Canada.
