When Canada’s National Golf in Schools Program was launched in 2009, stakeholders targeted only elementary school students, and their parents and teachers, when teeing up an initiative aimed at teaching life skills through the sport.

Today, as Golf in Schools launches its 2nd Annual 12 Days of Golf Christmas fundraiser, the program has expended to include high schools from coast to coast. In 2014, when London Hunt and Country Club hosted the CP Women’s Open, Golf Canada made Golf in Schools awareness a priority as the LPGA Tour stop further invested in the community.

For a second year, the 12 Days of Golf fundraising campaign is being promoted by stakeholder Golf Ontario, which hopes to top the $30,000 raised for Ontario schools during the December 2016 campaign.

“The 12 Days of Golf gives all Ontario golfers the chance to purchase exclusive tee times and play some of the best courses in the province,” explained Golf Ontario Executive Director Mike Kelly. “This is a great way to treat the golfer on your holiday list and it is all thanks to the generosity of our great member clubs.

“The Golf in Schools Program is a great grassroots program,” Kelly added. “Introducing young people to all that golf has to offer helps shape our youth by reinforcing values like integrity, respect and perseverance.”

Here’s how the 12 Days of Golf fundraiser works. When it opens on eBay on December 1, multiple foursomes will be made available for auction every three days. The items – tee times for foursomes – will only be listed at the online auction block for those three days, before being replaced by a new set of foursomes. All foursome blocks will have a minimum bid, and will have a Buy It Now feature.

Local courses on the block will include Greenhills Golf Club in Lambeth, and Windsor’s Essex Golf and Country Club. Other notable courses will include Markham’s Angus Glen Golf Club, Kleinburg’s Copper Creek Golf Club and Gravenhurst’s Muskoka Bay Resort.

A number of local stakeholders are included, thanks to Golf in Schools backing from the PGA of Canada and PGA of Ontario; National Golf Course Owners Association Canada; ClubLink Corporation, which operates Greenhills; Golf Town; and Acura Canada.

With a myriad of fundraisers at Christmas time, this one ranks as an ace for golfers. Golf in Schools was launched in order to give Canadian youth the opportunity to be introduced to the game of golf as a part of their elementary school physical education curriculum. Today, it has grown to three levels, including an Elementary Program for Grades 1-5; Intermediate Program for Grades 6-8; and a High School Program.

Developed by Physical and Health Education Canada in partnership with the Royal Canadian Golf Association (now Golf Canada), and the Canadian Professional Golfers’ Association (now PGA of Canada), the Golf in Schools Program was designed to allow school teachers, regardless of their golf background, the ability to deliver required physical education learning outcomes through the sport of golf. In addition to helping teachers assist students to become more physically fit, the program was designed to introduce thousands of youth to the game of golf each school year.

When the program was launched, former Golf Canada CEO Scott Simmons said, “The program creates a vital link between the education community and the golf community so that teachers, students and parents can gain better access to and familiarity with this wonderful lifetime sport that not only encourages physical activity, but (also) a very strong sense of core values.”

All recent studies point to golf as being this nation’s number one participation sport. It is, indeed, one of the only pastimes to be enjoyed from elementary school age to the golden years. In fact, Golf in Schools’ supporter the Canadian Seniors’ Golf Association acknowledges its own role in growing the game.

Golf in Schools also allows you to support local schools through the Adopt A School link at its website, golfinschools.golfcanada.ca.

The 12 Days of Golf runs from December 1 to 12. Bidding for foursomes is available through a link at the Golf Ontario website gao.ca/12days, as well as live on eBay at ebay.ca/usr/golfontario.
