Today at Oshawa’s Royal Ashburn Golf Club, London’s Oakridge Oaks golf team finished 10th amongst 20 teams at the OFSAA boys’ golf championship.

Entering the second and final round at the 6,300-yard track, Oakridge sat in 12th spot. A strong performance today from Kevin Frehner helped the Oaks gain two spots on the team leaderboard.

Frehner shot a second-round 79 for a two-day total of 85-79–164 (+20).

Isabella Portokalis shot 82-83–165 (+21), while teammate Jillian Friyia finished 84-84–168 (+24), and fourth team member Calvin Norris shot 81-88–169 (+25).

The Oaks were the first team in OFSAA history to include two female members. Portokalis won her second-straight TVRA Central title this fall, while the Oaks won that tournament and gained entry into the OFSAA tourney via their WOSSAA gold medal.

Norris, who like Friyia plays out of Highland CC, captured this summer’s Les Thomas Memorial Tournament on the Junior Tyson Tour.

The host team from Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby won OFSAA gold with a team-total score of 450 (+18), 47 strokes better than the Oaks. St. Mary’s from Cobourg captured silver, while Port Perry SS won bronze.

Sheldon Pryce captured the high school boys’ division, while Kavith Ranchagoda of Richmond Hill won the boys’ open division title.

London’s last OFSAA boys’ golf medal was captured by South SS with silver in 2004, while Saunders SS was the last London high school to capture gold in 2011.

“We were happy to jump to 10th spot overall, but as a team we were pretty disappointed with our performance,” said Oaks coach Mike Granger.”
