Canadian Golf Hall Digitizing Canadian Golfer, Needs Your Help

From Meggan Gardner, Curator, Canadian Golf Hall of Fame:

The Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and Museum (CGHF) is in need of digitizing a rare collection of magazines that span over 25 years.

The CGHF is the only public repository with a complete collection of a publication called The Canadian Golfer.  The publication was printed monthly from 1915 until 1941 and offers not only detailed stories regarding clubs, tournaments and people, but international stories.  Due to the age and frequency of use of these publications we are seeking the public’s support  to digitize the over 200 issues of The Canadian Golfer.

The Canadian Golfer is our first resource for conducting research.  It is also the first resource that is requested by scholars.  The digitization of The Canadian Golfer will aid in its preservation as we eliminate the need to ‘flip’ through the pages for information.

The bound copies of The Canadian Golfer are fragile.  We do not have the manpower nor the time to scan the approximately 24,000 pages that comprise the collection.  The cost of digitizing the collection will be  $0.45 a page. The scanning will be hired out to a company that deals with digitization of records and has experience working with delicate material.

Once the scans are completed with OCR results, we have an internal web programmer who will be working with us to build the appropriate platform for the results to be housed online. All the issues would be a fully searchable online with the results being available in full downloads.

The end results: the publication will be available for free to the public through our website.

Each and every cent donated will help in scanning and thereby preserving this important collection of sport history.
