Looking Back on the 2008 Golf Season
Well, the 2008 golf season is winding down – can you believe it? It seems like just yesterday I was reorganizing my golf bag, planning ways to fix my game, and visiting stores to pick up new outfits, gloves, balls and shoes.
But now the days are getting shorter, and you have to be careful when you pick your tee time so you can finish before dark.
It’s been a strange season with all the rain. I am surprised at the number of games deferred this year because of inclement weather. I am still trying to complete a game at a course that has already given me rain checks on two separate occasions. And, my drives have been a little shorter this year as the wetter fairways don’t help with roll.
Despite this, however, the Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWGA) has had a very successful season. We offered our members:
-
An exciting opening event with 18 holes of golf
-
4
different courses for weekly evening
golf games
-
14 week day events
-
7 Saturday or Sunday
events
-
5 evening events at private courses
-
A weekend ladies’ golf getaway
-
A trip to Ottawa to attend the LPGA tournament
-
A charity tournament that raised $25,000 for leukemia research
-
A club championship followed by the EWGA sectionals in Bristol Harbour, New York
In terms of education, we offered:
Our major sponsor, Callaway Canada, hosted two events for us: March 12 (at their headquarters in Concord); and June 25 (Copper Creek).
During the winter months, we are also planning golf leagues using simulators and networking events. In February, some of our members are planning on attending the EWGA national conference in Palm Springs in February, while others are going on a golfing trip to Panama.
So, despite the weather, the EWGA has bloomed. We are already planning for next year’s opening — April 25. And we are working on opening additional chapters across Canada.

Jane Watson, 2007-08 President of the Executive Women’s Golf Association, is a businesswoman with a passion for golf. Fortunately, her work — as a trainer/consultant in business writing — allows her to travel across Canada. Whenever possible, she takes her clubs with her. The goal of Jane and her husband is to play all the public platinum-rated courses in Canada. They are currently just over half-way through their journey.
