Golf Bag Review: Sun Mountain Superlight 3.5
by Jeffrey Reed
Sun Mountain is much more than just a golf bag company, but when this company designs a golf bag, it’s done right. We reviewed the Superlight 3.5 bag, and my bad back thanks you, Sun Mountain.
First, a bit more about Sun Mountain. You no doubt are familiar with the name of this innovative company, whose offerings include: the Eclipse lightweight stand bag (1986); Headwind outerwear (1990); Speed Cart (1999); Superlight 3.5 prototype (2001); Roller Top handle bag (2003); and the Speed E electric cart (2005).
The new Superlight 3.5 bag is just that – a 3.5 lb. bag – which still has room to boast a 9.5 in. three-way top, plus seven roomy pockets. Its integrated handle makes it easy to pick up and set down. There’s a water bottle pocket, a velour-lined valuables pocket, and a full-length clothing pocket – all features which you would only expect from a much heavier bag.
I really like the X-Strap dual strap system, which attaches to the top of the bag, thus moving the centre of gravity of the bag for better balance and easier carrying. This is the first carry bag I’ve tried which really does not put any pressure on my aching back. Kudos, Sun Mountain. As well, specially designed triangular foot pads prevent the legs from sliding on smooth surfaces.
Sun Mountain leaves nothing to chance in its Superlight 3.5 design. There’s a matching rainhood, ball pocket, pen holder, curved zippers for easier access to pockets, and top-mounted leg mechanism for added stability.
If you’ve missed out on carrying your bag because of a bad back, then the Superlight 3.5 just might be the bag to get you back into the game. The colours are snazzy, too: I like the orange and black bag.
