Belvedere GC Hosts 2012 Canadian Women’s Senior Championship
BELVEDERE GOLF CLUB TO HOST 2012 ROYALE CUP CANADIAN WOMEN’S SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
- Competitors to vie for champion’s exemption into 2012 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship –
Charlottetown, P.E.I. (Golf Canada)- Top senior female golfers from Canada and beyond will compete for glory at the 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship, which will take place from August 21-23 at Belvedere Golf Club in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
This year’s Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship will feature 118 golfers competing in a three-day, 54-hole stroke play event, which includes both a Senior and Super Senior division. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 70 players and ties.
Conducted since 1971, the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship has featured many of the Canada’s top senior golfers. Canadian Golf Hall of Fame members Marlene Streit, Gayle Borthwick, Marilyn O’Connor and Margaret Todd have all found success at the event in the past.
“The Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship is a showcase of top senior golf talent, and it should be a fun and exciting competition to watch,” said Tournament Director Mary Beth McKenna.
“Belvedere Golf Club will be the perfect venue to host this event, and the beautiful surroundings are sure to be a great backdrop for the smooth swings of these experienced players.”
The 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship Senior division is open to female amateur golfers who have reached their 50th birthday by the first schedule day of the championship, while the Super Senior division is open to those who have reached their 60th birthday by that same timeline.
Last year, Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Mary Ann Hayward of Aurora, Ont. came out on top of the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship leader board for the second year in a row, after winning the 2010 version of the tournament by seven strokes. In 2011, Hayward beat out Jackie Little of Port Alberni, B.C. by three shots for the title. Recently, Hayward also came in ninth place at the 2012 Toronto Star Women’s Amateur Championship.
Alison Murdoch of Victoria, B.C. will also compete at this year’s Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship. Murdoch has won this event four times, and she won the Super Senior division last year. She was also the runner-up to Hayward at the 2010 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship.
Lynda Palahniuk of Kelowna, B.C., who won this event in 2003 and has since finished in second place three times, will also compete at Belvedere.
The 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Champion will receive an exemption to the 2012 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, to take place at Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa. from September 8-13.
