CJGA to Hold Lipton Brisk Canada Cup Team East Qualifier at Diamondback GC
Richmond Hill, Ont. (May 19, 2011) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) is returning to Diamondback Golf Club in Richmond Hill, Ont. this weekend to host the Lipton Brisk Canada Cup Team East Qualifier on May 21 and 22. The event is slated for a full field of golfers who will attempt to navigate the tough par-72 course and impress the CJGA Team Canada Selection Committee. Juniors are competing for a spot in the ninth annual Lipton Brisk Canada Cup later this summer in Welland, Ont. As the only national Ryder Cup style event in Canada, it prepares elite players in the country for match play events on the international level.
Jacob Lehman of Guelph, Ont. and Gavin McQueenie of Toronto are expected to be in the hunt Sunday afternoon in the Boys 14 & Under division. They finished in a tie for second at the first event of the season in Fenwick, Ont. and are looking to secure their first victory of the year. Both golfers have shown composure down the stretch in recent tournaments. Lehman birdied 10, 11 and 13 en route to a 1-under-par 35 on the final nine holes in Belleville, Ont. while McQueenie carded five birdies in the final round at Peninsula Lakes to shoot a +1 (72) on Sunday. Sam McNulty of Port Perry, Ont. is another name to watch after three top-ten finishes in 2011, including a runner-up showing earlier this month in Ajax, Ont.
Several juniors are competing in their first tournament on the CJGA schedule in the Boys 15-19 division. Matthew Capern of Oakville, Ont. finished in a tie for third at Peninsula Lakes and continues his season this weekend in Richmond Hill. Andrew Pacione of Newmarket, Ont. had a top-ten finish at the Humber College Invitational last week. Competing against varsity athletes, he hopes to continue his strong play and pick up his first win of the year. Other juniors competing include Eric Flockhart of Mississauga, Ont., Duncan Buchanan of London, Ont. and Brandon Lustig of Toronto.
Brittany Davidson of Mississauga, Ont. and hometown favourite Grace Chung headline the Girls 11-19 division. Both golfers had great showings last week in Stouffville, finishing fifth and third respectively. Davidson had two victories in 2010 and placed tied for third at the CJGA National Junior Golf Championship. Chung is looking for her second title of 2011 after winning the Junior Worlds Qualifier last weekend in Janetville, Ont. She carded a +1 on the back nine to shoot a final round 76. Rachel Pollock of Guelph, Ont. is also in the field this weekend after finishing in second place behind Chung at Wolf Run.
Tee times for both rounds begin at 12:30. Spectators are encouraged to attend.

Recap - Round 1
Sunny skies and warm temperatures greeted a full field of junior golfers this afternoon at the Diamondback Golf Club in Richmond Hill, ON. All players in the field are vying for a spot on Team East at this years Lipton Brisk Canada Cup taking place from July 17-20 at Lochness Links in Welland, ON. The Diamondback Golf Club has proven to be a true test to juniors in the past but as expected, and with the help of prime weather conditions some players were able to shoot some very impressive scores.
Competition is as close as it can get in the Boys 14 and Under division with a three-way tie atop the leader board. Gavin McQueenie (Toronto, ON), Sean O’Hara (Mississauga, ON), and Wesley Day (Ajax, ON) all shot division low scores of 78, which creates some tight competition moving in to the final round. Not far behind are Sam McNulty (Port Perry, ON) and Jason Chung (Thornhill, ON) both shooting scores of 79 tightening the field even further going in to Sunday.
In the Boys 15-19 division Austin James (Bath, ON) was able to secure the first round lead shooting an impressive 1 under 71 on the tough Diamondback layout. Although, James still has some work left as Christopher Lancaster (Ancaster, ON) is nipping at his heels shooting a solid first round even par 72. Immediately behind Lancaster is Matthew Capern (Oakville, ON) tallying a first round total of 73. With all of this clutter atop the leader board we are sure to see a tight race to the finish in this division.
Following suit with the boys, the Girls division is also seeing a flurry of players that will certainly be contenders going in to Sunday. At the top of the leader board is CJGA veteran Brittany Davidson (Mississauga, ON) shooting an opening round score of 79. Immediately behind Davidson is Rachel Pollock (Guelph, ON) shooting an 80. Close behind Pollock is Grace Chung (Richmond Hill, ON) shooting an opening round score of 81. You can expect Pollock and Chung to make a strong run at Davidson tomorrow afternoon as Chung will be looking for the taste of victory once again coming off of her first win of the season at Wolf Run Golf Club last weekend.
Second round action continues tomorrow at 12:30 PM at the Diamondback Golf Club in Richmond Hill, ON. It should be an exciting day with all players trying to secure their spots on Team East at this year’s Lipton Brisk Canada Cup.
