Canadian International Junior Challenge Returns to OslerBrook

CLEARVIEW TOWNSHIP, ON (September 12, 2010) – The Canadian International Junior Challenge is set to return to the beautiful OslerBrook Golf & Country Club come Monday, with six countries ready to challenge for the coveted title. The six team competition, which is made of four man teams, will look to knock off two time defending champion England in the three day three day stroke play competition.

The event, conducted by the Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) with the support of Nike Golf Canada as the title sponsor, is pleased to welcome the Colombian Golf Federation, Costa Rica Golf Association, English Golf Union, Norwegian Golf Federation, and the USA (International Junior Golf Academy) to the 4th edition of the event, in addition to CJGA Team Canada. Each team is comprised of four junior golfers aged 18 years or younger with the top three scores from each team will count towards the total team score for each round.

“The CJGA is pleased to once again host the Canadian International Junior Challenge this year at OslerBrook Golf & Country Club,” said John Lawrence, CIJC Tournament Director. “Aside from the competitive nature of the event, it’s an opportunity to show off a unique part of Canada’s landscape to the visiting nations. Nike Golf Canada continues to support the game at the grassroots level and is to be commended for their support in growing this event to become of one the world’s most notable junior golf invitational’s” he added.

“Nike Golf Canada is proud to return as title sponsor of the Canadian International Junior Challenge, which has quickly established itself as a prestigious competition that showcases some of the best junior golfers from Canada and around the world,” said Vitalis Gomes, Director of Marketing for Nike Golf Canada. “Supporting this great event further demonstrates Nike Golf’s commitment to developing junior golfers in Canada and internationally. We commend the Canadian Junior Golf Association for their work in growing this great event.”

In 2009, it was the team from England that once again took home the team title defeating CJGA Team Canada by eighteen strokes when it was all said and done. Medalist honours went to Englishman, Tyrell Hatton, who finished the tournament at even par, 216.

The private OslerBrook Golf & Country Club will again host the event and should prove to be a fantastic test for the participating teams. The picturesque course is nestled between the Niagara Escarpment and Georgian Bay amid 230 acres of natural terrain.

CJGA Team Canada will be represented by four outstanding young golfers, Turner Southey-Gordon of Toronto, ON, Lucas Kim of Toronto, ON, Riley Fleming of Airdrie, AB and Derek Rucki, of Chestermere, AB. CJGA National Team Coach Sean Casey will assume team manager duties for the Canadian side.

England Captures Canadian International Junior Challenge for Third Straight Year

CLEARVIEW TOWNSHIP, ON (September 16, 2010) – With the pressure of repeating as champions for the third straight year, England overcame poor weather conditions during the final round of the Nike Golf Canadian International Junior Challenge to just that. The four boys aged 18 and under shot a team total 689 over the three days.

Battling the cold and rainy conditions at OslerBrook Golf & Country Club as well as a one hour and twenty minute rain delay, Juan Sebastian Munoz of Colombia showed patience and displayed his skills shooting a final round 76 (+4) to capture medalist honors. “I am very happy to win this tournament” said Munoz. “I would like to thank my manager and my teammates and all the players this week” he added.

“The tournament was played in excellent spirit and has been a tremendous success for our side,” said Derek Hughes, team manager of England. “The hospitality shown here in Canada has been truly wonderful.” The team from England included Oliver Carr, Jack Heasman, Paul Lockwood and Nick Newbold. The English squad went into the final round with an eleven stroke lead of the second placed Colombians which proved to be just too much to overcome, and finished five back at the completion of the tournament.

CJGA Team Canada had a good week overall, finishing in third place in the team competition. After shooting a final round team total 250, the team of Riley Fleming, Lucas Kim, Derek Rucki, and Turner Southey-Gordon finished the tournament 21 stroke behind the first place English.

Norway, champions of the inaugural Canadian International Junior Challenge had a final round 250 to finish in fourth place, followed by United States and Costa Rica.

The Nike Golf Canadian International Junior Challenge will return to OslerBrook Golf & Club in 2011.
