ALBIN CHOI SHOOTS 68 TO TAKE SECOND ROUND LEAD AT 106TH PLAYING OF CANADIAN MEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
British Columbia Wins 23rd Willingdon Cup title
72 competitors sit at 148 (+4) or better to advance to weekend play at London Hunt and Country Club
London, Ont. (Golf Canada) – Albin Choi of Toronto sits alone atop the leaderboard after firing a second round 68 (-4) to move to 7-under for the tournament at the 106th playing of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship taking place at London Hunt and Country Club and Redtail Golf Course.
Choi, who played at the London Hunt and Country Club on Friday, carded four birdies during his bogey-free round to take a single stroke lead into third round play on Saturday.
The 18-year old member of Team Canada’s Development Squad has had a solid 2010 competitive season to date, qualifying for the 2010 U.S. Amateur which takes place August 23–29. Choi has also amassed three CN Future Links victories in the past two years, as well as a win at the Ontario Junior Boy’s Championship last year and the Ontario Jr. Spring Classic this year.
“Everything was just consistent today, I drove the ball really well, which is the key to scoring well on this course,” said Choi. “It is too early to say anything. But this is Canada’s national event and it would be great to see my name on that trophy. I just have to keep focused and keep playing the way I have been playing.”
Jeffrey Clarridge of Barrie, Ont., held a share of the tournament lead at 7-under through 17 holes,, but bogeyed his final hole at Redtail on Friday afternoon to fall into second at 6-under.
Team Canada’s Eugene Wong of North Vancouver shot a second round 2-under 70 and sits tied for third with American Lion Kim of Ann Arbor, MI and Marc-Etienne Bussieres of Gatineau, Que. Wong, Kim and Bussieres all played their second round at London Hunt and Country Club.
Opening-round leader Graham Hill of Forest, Ont., who began the day at 5-under, struggled to a round of 4-over 76 at Redtail Golf Course, the same venue that played host to his 2005 Ontario Amateur victory. The 24-year old will look to bounce back on the weekend after falling back into a share of 13th position at 1-under.
Two time defending champion Cam Burke of New Hamburg, Ont. remains in contention after his round of 3-under 69 at London Hunt puts him at 4-under for the tournament and share of sixth, three-shots back.
Following Friday’s second round, the field was reduced to the low 70 scores and ties. It took a score of 148 (+4) to make that cut, with 72 players advancing to weekend play at the London Hunt and Country Club.
Redtail Golf Course had a scoring average of 77.54 while London Hunt and Country Club yielded a scoring average of 76.05 over the first 36 holes of the championship.
British Columbia Wins Willingdon Cup
Team British Columbia combined for score of 213 Friday and a team-total 425 (-7) over 36 holes at London Hunt and Country Club and Redtail Golf Course to win the Willingdon Cup inter-provincial team title. The victory marked the province’s 23rd Willingdon Cup title and first since 2004.
Team Alberta finished five stroke back in second with a team-total 430 (-2) while Saskatchewan (+1), defending champion Ontario (+5) and Quebec (+6) rounded out the top five.
The Inter-provincial Team Championship for the Willingdon Cup featured four-member teams competing in conjunction with the first two rounds of stroke play. The best three of four scores count towards the overall team total. The first Willingdon Cup Championship was held in 1927.
Third-round action at the 106th playing of Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship will resume Saturday at London Hunt with tee times beginning at 7:30 am. Live scoring, tee times and pairings are available online at www.golfcanada.ca/championships.
