GRAHAM HILL SHOOTS 67 TO TAKE OPENING-ROUND LEAD AT CANADIAN MEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

- Team British Columbia takes two-stroke lead into final-round of Willingdon Cup -

London, Ont. (Golf Canada) - Graham Hill of Forest, Ont. fired a 5-under par 67 to take the opening-round lead at the 106th playing of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship in London, Ont.

Hill, who played his opening-round at the London Hunt and Country Club, carded eight birdies and three bogeys to take a single stroke lead into tomorrow’s second round.

The Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship is Hill’s first competitive golf event in almost a year.

“I didn’t really know what to expect today because I haven’t played competitive golf for a while,” said Hill a former member of Team Canada and brother of recently turned golf professional Matt Hill. “I played well, made a couple of bogeys I’d like to have back, but I also left some birdies out there.”

Hill’s last competitive golf championship was the 2009 U.S. Amateur. He missed the cut, but considering he had mono, just playing that week was a victory.

The 24-year old has an impressive golf resume which includes two appearances at the World Amateur, a third-place finish at the Mexican Amateur Championship and a semi-finalist finish at the 2007 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship. Hill also won the 2005 Ontario Amateur Championship which was held at Redtail Golf Course, where he’ll play tomorrow.

“I know Redtail better than London Hunt,” added Hill. “The rough is pretty penal, so I’m going to try and keep it in the fairway. It’s still early, I’m not even thinking about whether or not I can win.”

A log jam of players trail Hill, including American Lion Kim ofAnn Arbor, MI, Jeffrey Clarridge of Barrie, Ont., Daniel Kim, Toronto and Marc-Étienne Bussières of Gatineau, Que. The four players shot matching 4-under par 68’s. The Kim’s and Bussières played Redtail Golf Course today, while Clarridge teed-off at the London Hunt and Country Club.

Redtail Golf Course had a scoring average of 76.61 while London Hunt and Country Club yielded a scoring average of 75.9.

Coinciding with the stroke play championship is the Willingdon Cup Interprovincial Team Championship.

Team British Columbia takes a slim 2-stroke lead into tomorrow’s final round of Inter-provincial team play after combining for a team-total 3-under par.

British Columbia last won the Willingdon Cup in 2004, when the event was held at Beaconsfield Golf Club in Pointe Claire, Que.

Lurking second, 2-strokes back of the lead, is team Alberta. The host Ontario squad sits third at 1-over par.

The second round tees off Friday at 7:30 am ET. Following the completion of second-round play, the provincial team champions will be crowned and the field will be cut to the low 70 competitors and ties. The final 36 holes of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship on Saturday and Sunday will be contested at London Hunt.

Live scoring, tee times and pairings for the 106th playing of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship are available online at www.golfcanada.ca/championships.

GOLF CANADA – YOU BELONG

Golf Canada – a member-based organization governed by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) – is the governing body of golf in Canada, representing 377,000 members at 1,600 clubs across the country. Recognized by Sport Canada as the National Sports Organization (NSO) for golf in this country, Golf Canada is responsible for promoting participation in and a passion for the game of golf in Canada.

Golf Canada actively conducts championships, programs and services to help shape the present and future of golf in Canada. High performance athlete development, National Golf in Schools, Golf Fore the Cure, the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and Museum and CN Future Links, Canada’s national junior golf program, are only some of the initiatives the association leads for golf in Canada. As the authority for golf in Canada, the association also administers the Rules of Golf, amateur status and handicapping and course rating under the respected RCGA brand.

In addition, Golf Canada conducts Canada’s most prestigious golf championships. The RBC Canadian Open and CN Canadian Women’s Open attract the best professional golfers in the world, while regional junior and national amateur championships provide world class competitive opportunities for Canada’s top golfers to showcase their talents.
