Mississauga, Peterborough and Orillia On Top After Final Round at Mizuno East

Sutton West (July 7th, 2010) – It was déjà vu all over again for juniors during the third and final round of the Mizuno Eastern Canadian Jr. Championship at The Briars Golf Club. An early summer heat wave persisted for a third straight day, and golfers did their best to combat the blistering sun while additionally fighting final round nerves. Maintenance and food/beverage staff worked tirelessly to keep water containers topped up on what proved to be the hottest of the three rounds. The heat, however, was no obstacle for those who had been able to post the lowest scores in their respective divisions over the first two days. Round 2 leaders, who went into the final round with comfortable leads, were ultimately able to stay on top when cards were turned in at the end of the day.

Owen Bates (Mississauga, ON) captured the Boys 14 & Under crown with a final round 81, which was good enough for an eight stroke victory. “It was a tricky course, very tight, definitely target golf,” said Bates about The Briars Golf Club. “I was dialled in and consistent with my irons. I played extremely well over the first two days and was able to keep scores low and avoid big numbers.” Gavin McQueenie (Toronto, ON), David Anderson (Markham, ON) and Zackery Secord (Midland, ON) all posted identical three-day totals of 237, and finished in a tie for second.

Without a doubt, the most impressive performance of the week went to the Boys 15-19 Division Champion, Cole Kent (Peterborough, ON.) Opening the competition with a five-over 76, Kent went one-under for the final two days of the tournament to close out the win by six shots. “I played really well,” said Kent on his victory. “I came into the week struggling with my putting, but at the end of the tournament I can definitely say that it was my short game and putting that stood out.” Robbie Ellis (St. Catherines, ON) also posted impressive second and third round scores of 72 (+1) and 71 (E) to finish alone in second place, two shots up on third place Jackson Lizardo of Fairfax, VA.

Mahealani Subad (Orillia, ON) walked away with the largest margin of victory, capping off a fourteen shot win in the Girls Division with a final round 86, her best round of the week. “I played really well. I tried to stay focused and play my best golf,” said the 13-year old champion. “It was a challenging course, but it was very fun to play.” Jessica Ip (Richmond Hill, ON) barely made it in time for her third round, but despite her 2-stroke penalty tardiness penalty, was able safely secure second place with a 93 on the day. Alex Rawn of Toronto, ON closed out the top-3.
