While London's Sandy Somerville dominated the Canadian Amateur in the 1920s and ‘30s, with six titles (1926, ’28, ’30-’31, ’35, ’37), and claiming four runner-up finishes (1924-25, ’34 and ’38), two other golfers with London connections have claimed Canada's top amateur title. Former Toronto resident Warren Sye, now a Londoner, won in 1994 at Hamilton G&CC, while Brent Franklin, formerly of Calgary and a former London junior, won three consecutive titles 1985-87 . . . Somerville was voted Canada's Golfer of the Half-Century 1900-1950, as selected through the RCGA's poll including Canadian sportswriters and CP . . . Today is Qualifying Monday at London Hunt and Country Club. A large field will attempt to grab a minimum of 15 available entries into the championship tournament field.

B.C.'s Nick Taylor, 22, is a favourite this week. He's also in the U.S. Amateur field Aug. 23-29 at Chambers Bay . . . Opening round tee times include: Mitch Sutton, London (12:30 p.m., Redtail); Jace Walker, St. Thomas (12:41 p.m., Redtail); Eugene Wong, North Vancouver (12:52 p.m., Redtail); Taylor (1:03 p.m., Redtail) - all 1st tee; Dave Bunker, Woodbridge, (8:03 a.m., Redtail); Cam Burke, New Hamburg and Lion Kim, Lake Mary, Fla. (8:14 a.m., Redtail) - 10th tee. At London H&CC, Brett Cairns, Courtland and Graham Hill, Forest (8:25 a.m. - 1st tee); and Richard Jung, Toronto (8:36 a.m., 10th tee) . . . Canadian coach Henry Brunton calls Taylor "absolutely" the player to watch this week. "In fairness, he's No. 1 in the world. Of course he wants to win his own national championship but let's face it, the No. 1 prize in the world is the U.S. Amateur" . . . Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C. is in the field this week. The 16-year-old won six consecutive tourneys as of late, including the B.C. Amateur and Junior events . . . London's Junior Tyson Tour is well represented at the Canadian Amateur, with 21 juniors caddying, thanks to caddiemaster Jim Vickers's proposal . . . View photos from the Canadian Amateur at the London Ontario Golf Facebook page! Visit http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=39633081677 . . . Practice rounds at London Hunt, 3 p.m., and very little action around the club (other than Golf Canada staff and volunteers). Media centre manned only by yours truly. Things will change quickly, during the flag raising ceremony plus Willingdon Cup team intros this evening. Mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best will say a few words during the ceremony - good stage for some election banter . . . DeCicco-Best arrived a half-hour late, but didn't miss a beat with her welcome speech later during the opening ceremonies . . . Surprised that London Ontario Golf was the only media present during the late afternoon and opening ceremonies. That will change some Sunday afternoon . . . Tough day for 53-year-old Doug Alexander, who posted an 82 (+10) at Redtail on Thursday. But a handful of youngsters fairwed worse than the Hunt Club president . . . U.S. Public Links champ Lion Kim, and Daniel Kim of Toronto both shot 68 (-4) at Redtail, while London's Britt Pronk shot 70 (-2). Great day for Graham Hill at London Hunt: he's the clubhouse leader at 67 (-5) at London Hunt.

Graham Hill of Forest, Ont. fired a 5-under par 67 to take the opening-round lead at the 106th playing of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship. Hill, who played his opening round at the London Hunt and Country Club, carded eight birdies and three bogeys to take a single stroke lead into tomorrow’s second round. The Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship is Hill’s first competitive golf event in almost a year. A log jam of players trail Hill, including American Lion Kim ofAnn Arbor, MI, Jeffrey Clarridge of Barrie, Ont., Daniel Kim, Toronto and Marc-Étienne Bussières of Gatineau, Que. The four players shot matching 4-under par 68’s. The Kim’s and Bussières played Redtail Golf Course today, while Clarridge teed-off at the London Hunt and Country Club. Redtail Golf Course had a scoring average of 76.61 while London Hunt and Country Club yielded a scoring average of 75.9. Coinciding with the stroke play championship is the Willingdon Cup Interprovincial Team Championship. Team British Columbia takes a slim 2-stroke lead into tomorrow’s final round of Inter-provincial team play after combining for a team-total 3-under par. British Columbia last won the Willingdon Cup in 2004, when the event was held at Beaconsfield Golf Club in Pointe Claire, Que. Lurking second, 2-strokes back of the lead, is team Alberta. The host Ontario squad sits third at 1-over par . . . Photos from the amateur here at the London Ontario Golf Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=39633081677&v=photos&ref=ts
