Canada’s Top Junior Golfers will be competing in the Prestigious Junior Worlds over the next 4 Days

Tuesday, July 13, 2010 – The Junior Worlds, one of the most prestigious touranments in the world, for young aspiring golfers who have the dreams and desires to make golf their future, begins today at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California.
The Callaway Golf Junior World Golf Championships is truly unique with a total field size exceeding 1000 golfers. Participants from 45 states and 53 countries will be represented over the next four days. Not only is the Junior Worlds important to all the junior golfers who participate but it's also a big week for college coaches, who use the Junior Worlds as a hunting ground for up-and-coming talent.
Junior Golfers from 5 years old to 18 will competing at courses across San Diego - Torrey Pines, Country Club of Rancho Bernardo, Welk Resort, Lomas Santa Fe, Riverwalk, Sycuan Resort and Colina Park.
Megan Mahoney, the Executive Director of the San Diego Junior Golf Association, said, “I expect about 120 coaches from 80 schools will be roaming the grounds at Torrey Pines Golf Course, the site of the 15-17 age divisions for boys and girls over the four days of competition”.
One of the draws for coaches is the large international contingent the Junior World always attracts. The boys will be playing four rounds on Torrey Pines South, a course that was tough enough to host a U.S. Open while the girls will be playing the Torrey Pines North.
Many Junior World champions have gone on to enjoy successful careers on the PGA and LPGA Tours, including Amy Alcott, Notah Begay, Brandie Burton, John Cook, Dorothy Delasin, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Corey Pavin, Pat Perez, Joan Pitcock, Nick Price, Kim Shipman, Craig Stadler, David Toms and Tiger Woods.
With one of the largest contingents, Canada is set to make its mark over the competition days. Two years ago, Eugene Wong represented Canada well by winning the Junior Worlds. This was the first time a Canadian has won such a prestigious event.
This year, Canada will be well represented again with some outstanding junior golfers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego, California – July 15, 2010 – Adam Svensson, a member of the CJGA for many years, charged into contention on Day 3 at the Junior Worlds in San Diego to climb within 3 strokes of the lead with a tremendous round of 66 today. On a tough Torrey Pines South Course, home of the Buick PGA event for many years, Adam had 7 birdies. Adam now sits in second place overall in this prestigious tournament ready to claim his name to a vast array of talented golfers such as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickleson.

“I was striking the ball much better today and played a little more aggressive today. I didn’t lay back. I spoke to my coach, Rob, yesterday and he really helped me out.” said Adam Svensson, “and I was able to see the greens much better.”

Another CJGA member, Richard Jung closed the gap as well shooting a two under par to take 3rd place overall.

“ I played well today but I could have played better. I just have to make smarter decisions,” said Richard Jung. “I am looking forward to tomorrow. I have a challenge ahead but I am up for it.”

Adam Svensson, the second Canadian, in 3 years to win the Junior Worlds

San Diego, California – July 16, 2010 – Adam Svensson, a member of the CJGA for many years and the Golf Canada Junior Team, today proved that Canadians are a force to be reckoned with on the International scene. Being 3 strokes down on the final day of competition for the Junior Worlds played at Torrey Pines Golf Course, Svensson charged from behind putting pressure on Jorge Fernandez Valdes from Argentina to win the Junior Worlds 15-17 age division.

This is the second time in the past 3 years that a Canadian has won the Junior Worlds. Eugene Wong won in 2008 and went on the become the rookie of the year in the NCAA this past year.

Going into todays final round Valdes had a 3 stroke tead but Adam cut his lead eventually taking it over after the 10th hole. On the back nine, Adam allowed Valdes to creep back into contention and take the lead once again. Going into the 18th hole, Adam challenged Valdes by going for the green on his second shot and making it. Valdes was then forced to go for the green as well but came up short and went into the pond in front of the green. His second shot went over the green and left the door open for Svensson to sink his put to win the Junior Worlds.

“It felt great. I am still trying come down off a high from winning, Wow.” said Svensson.

Richard Jung, a CJGA member and Golf Canada Junior Team Member, started off the day 10 strokes behind the lead. As the day went along, Jung pecked away from the lead to come within 3 strokes of tying for the overall.

“I missed 4 opportunities with my putting that could have changed the entire outcome” said Jung. “I gave it everything I had but I am proud of how us Canadians performed over the entire tournament”.

On the girls 15-17 side, Soobin Kim of the CJGA and Golf Canada Junior Team, fought back hard to finish in 5th overall. Soobin shot a 7 under par 67 for the low round of the day. Soobin had 8 birdies for the low round of the day and the best showing by either side.

All in all, Canadians showed that they are taking their place on the world stage and are becoming a force to be reconed with.

Other notables for today include:

Finish 7th overall in the boys division with a final round of 71 was Brendon Ng

In the boys 7-8 age division, Kelvin Lim and Ilirian Zalli tied for 5th.

Play continues on Friday for the Boys and Girls in the age division 15-17.
